New party ‘Jonotar Dol’ unveiled

A new political party named "Jonotar Dol", comprised of ex-military personnel, was unveiled yesterday at a programme in the capital.

Led by Brig Gen (retd) Md Shamim Kamal, the party said its ideology is to prioritise Bangladesh's interests.

"We will look neither left nor right. It is not our aim to serve the interests of any individual or vested groups," said Kamal, the chairperson of the party, in his speech.

"We won't get involved in unresolved issues about history -- we want to look towards the future," he added.

When asked about their stance on Awami League, Kamal said, "We don't want to criticise any person or organisation. We want to criticise the system. Fascism existed in this country before Awami League as well. But we will not support fascism or give space to any form of injustice."

The party promises equal rights and opportunities for all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or profession.

If elected to power, the party will also enforce a uniform education system for all, grounded in teaching ethics. In addition, the party will enforce mandatory military training for younger generations.

Their foreign policy strategy will be to establish friendly relations with true allies and ensure diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries, reflecting equality and mutual benefit.

They will also promote a bicameral parliament and a US-style parliamentary democracy.

Its short-term goal is to get as many seats as it can, but in 10 years it wants to lead the government.

A network of workers from 74 NGOs attended the programme and pledged their support to the party.

"A fair election is not a permanent solution. A permanent solution is a new political arrangement," said Kamal.
