The Daily Star retracts story on Dinajpur death

Following the publication of our online report on the 18th of April, 2025, titled "Hindu community leader beaten to death after abduction in Dinajpur," and reports by police and other investigative agencies, we felt the need to re-examine the sources on which our report was based.

While his family has alleged suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, 58, our report lacked sufficient corroboration.

In the course of our internal review, we found that the report was filed and published without adequate due diligence. This led us to conclude that it falls short of The Daily Star's editorial standards, particularly in fact-checking and source verification. We have therefore decided to remove the article from our website.

We unequivocally acknowledge that the text carried on our website does not meet the authentication standards of this paper and hence should not be used as a source and those who have done so should delete it as a reference.

We deeply regret this lapse.
