Table tennis tournament postponed over poor lighting and AC system

The Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation (BTTF) has officially postponed the upcoming President Cup Open Ranking and Prize Money Tournament, which was scheduled to take place from May 15 to 19, due to 'inadequate lighting and a non-functional air conditioning system' at the designated venue.

Despite completing key preparations, a press release from BTTF claimed, the federation was forced to delay the tournament due to the poor condition of the Shahid Tajuddin Wooden Floor Gymnasium.

Officials cited unbearable heat and lack of ventilation inside the enclosed gymnasium, posing health risks to national-level players. Engineers from the National Sports Council reported that restoring the air conditioning system would require at least Tk 12 crore and involve a lengthy budget and tendering process.

The federation is now exploring alternative venues such as the Mirpur Indoor Stadium or the Women's Sports Complex, provided their AC systems are functional and available for booking.

This postponement also cast doubt on upcoming international preparations, including events in Bahrain (October), Saudi Arabia (November), and the South Asian Games in Pakistan (February), as summer conditions may hinder the possibility of holding intensive training camps under foreign coaches, according to officials of BTTF.
