Teenager killed as rival groups clash in Narsingdi

One person was killed and several others injured in a clash between two rival groups in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi early today.
The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 17, son of Shafiqul Islam of Nojorpur village in Chandarkandi union.
The incident occurred early in the morning in the Nojorpur area, said Sujan Chandra Sarker, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Narsingdi District Police.
Among the injured, 22-year-old Rahat was critically wounded and has been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
According to police and local sources, there had been a longstanding dispute between Abid Hasan Rubel, a member of the upazila Jubo League, and Harun-or-Rashid, vice-president of the Raipura municipal unit of the Awami League, over local dominance.
Following the ongoing tension, supporters of both factions, armed with homemade weapons and firearms, engaged in a violent clash in the early hours today.
Saiful, who died on the spot during the violence, and Rahat, who was critically injured, are known to be supporters of Rubel group.
To evade arrest, several injured individuals from both groups are reportedly receiving treatment in secret at various hospitals, locals said.
Addl SP Sujan Chandra Sarker said, "The clash broke out early in the morning due to a group rivalry. One person was killed and several others sustained injuries from sharp weapons."
On information, police arrived at the scene in the morning and brought the situation under control.
He added that the body has been recovered and legal actions are underway.
Despite attempts, neither Abid Hasan Rubel nor Harun-or-Rashid could be reached for comments.
