Theatre aficionados of Chittagong city got the taste of an English play with a difference. "Heritage" was staged by the students of Asian University for Women (AUW) at Theatre Institute Chittagong (TIC) auditorium on Friday.

The Drama Club of AUW organised the event to recount the stories of oppressed women.

On the occasion, students and teacher of AUW and theatre enthusiasts of the city thronged the TIC premises.

Scripted by Ian Pounds, the play spread over six scenes was a commentary on how women in South Asia, Africa and other developing countries face oppression in a patriarchal society. The play also tried to provide solutions to these age old problems.

The play also zoomed in on the women of Afghanistan striving to learn science, history and expand their knowledge for decades, and the terror unleashed on them by the militants. The storyline of the play successfully interwove the agonising stories of street girls in India, refugee women in different countries and militants' torture of women in Nigeria.

Some 25 performers of AUW played different roles. Ian Pounds also designed the sets, music and lights.

"The play has helped me understand that a radical change in our perception of women can help create a society free from all oppression and discrimination," said Emtiaz Firoj, a member of the audience, after the play.
