Two killed, 500 houses damaged

At least two people were killed and over 500 houses damaged as nor'wester lashed Nabinagar and Kasba upazilas of Brahmanbaria and Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj yesterday and on Monday night.

Our B'baria correspondent reported that over 65 people were injured during the storm that swept through 25 villages under the two upazilas at around 8:30pm.

Rupok Kumar Shaha, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nabinagar Police Station, said Abdul Mannan, 60, of Narayanpur area in Nabinagar Municipality was killed as a wall collapsed on him.

Thirty-five people, who sustained injuries during the storm in 20 villages in the upazila, were admitted to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex.

Binoy Chandra Pal, deputy managing director (DGM) of Nabinagar Palli Bidyut Samity, said 35 electric poles in the affected villages were uprooted, plunging the areas into darkness. 

Nabinagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abu Shahed Chowdhury, who visited the affected villages yesterday, said the nor'wester lashed seven unions in the upazila, damaging over 400 houses. 

Kasba UNO Saiful Islam said at least 30 people were injured and around 100 houses were damaged as nor'wester hit five villages in the upazila on Monday night. 

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Mosharaf Hossain and Police Superintendent Md Maniruzzaman visited the storm-hit areas yesterday afternoon.

The DC assured the affected people that the district administration would give financial support to them. 

Our Moulvibazar correspondent adss: A man was killed and three others were injured as nor'wester lashed several area of Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Azizur Rahman, 40, son of late Nur Uddin of Mohammadpur village.

The injured are Aftab Uddin, 50, Nazir Ahmed,22, and Mukit Miah, 20, of Kholishajur village in the upazila. They are undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.
