Save city rivers, hills
Speakers at a meeting here on Saturday urged government to take steps to preserve the hills, rivers and other natural resources in the port city.
They said some influential quarters are destroying the greeneries of the city cutting the hill.
The factories are also destroying the biodiversity of the Karnaphuli and the Halda releasing garbage and chemical wastes to the rivers, they said.
Paribesh Chhatra Forum, People's Voice, Jono Udyog organised the meeting followed by a procession marking the World Environment Day.
The activists of non-government organisations (NGO) and environmentalist organisations took part in the programmes carrying placards, festoons in the procession that paraded the important thoroughfares of the city.
Prof AQM Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Prof Idris Ali of Chittagong College, Sharif Chawhan, Chief Executive of Jono Udyog spoke at the rally.

Rabindra festival ends
A two day-long Rabindra festival concluded at Shilpakala Academy in the port city on Sunday.
Artistes from Bangladesh and West Bengal performed at the programme arranged by cultural organisation Bodhan Abritti Parishad in association with GMG Airlines.
The programme was organised in observance of the 150th birth anniversary of Asia's first Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Poet Nirmalendu Gun inaugurated the festival as the chief guest.
Reciter Joyonta Chattopaddhaya, Prof Ferdous Ara Alim, dramatist Pradip Dewanji and GMG Airline's Assistant Manager Gopa Chakraborty.
Artistes from Bak-Bachik Shilpa Charcha Kendra of Kolkata performed an event titled “Aatpoure Rabindranath”.
The programme ended with the prize giving ceremony.

Tree fair begins
A month-long tree fair began on outer stadium premises in the port city on Tuesday organised by Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) as part of countrywide tree plantation programme.
Mayor Mohammad Manjur Alam inaugurated the programme as the chief guest with Councillor Md Jahir Ahmed Chowdhury in the chair.
Divisional Forest Officer Uttam Kumar Shaha, panel mayor Hasan Mahmud Hasni, woman Councillor Rekha Alam Chowdhury, acting Chief Executive Officer of CCC Dipak Chakraborty also spoke at the inaugural programme.
Various tree stalls have been set up at the fair to showcase different species of trees, saplings of various flowers and seasonal fruits.

Call to follow path of Gausul Azam to end stalking
Everyone should give up ill mentality and follow the moral path of Gausul Azam to end anti-social activities like stalking, vulgarity and other unethical behaviours in the society, said Kagtia Alia Gausul Azam Darbar Sharif's Morshed Principal Syed Md Munirullah Ahamadi Maddajilluhul Ali.
Maddajilluhul Ali was addressing as the chief guest the Gausul Azam conference on Jamiatul Falah National Mosque premises organised by Muniria Jubo Tablig Committee Bangladesh on Monday.
Former Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Panel Mayor Hasan Mahmud Hasni, Word Councillor Md Giyas Uddin, Prof Abul Mansur, Chittagong Press Club Vice-President Khorshed Alam, Prof Jalal Ahmed and The Dainik Azadi Senior Sub-Editor Sultan Ahmed Asrafi were the special guests at the programme.

Poet Mollika's contribution recalled
To pay homage to poet Mollika Sengupta Prama of West Bengal, Abritti Sangathan organised a recitation evening at Shilpakala Academy in the port city on Monday.
At the beginning of the programme, Rashed Hasan, head of Prama, presented a short profile of the poet.
Later, poets Abul Momen, Prof Ferdous Ara Alim, Khalid Ahsan, Bishwajit Chowdhury, Akhter Hossain and Asish Sen recited poems from Mollika.
Ranajit Rakshit, Anchal Chowdhury, Debasis Rudra and other members of Prama also recited in the programme.
Mollika Senguptha passed away in May 28 at the age of 51.
