Lake City plot owners hostage to CCC
Almost two years past the handover date, plots of Lake City Housing Society in Chittagong city are yet to be developed by Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), said the plot owners at a press conference.
They paid the full Tk 15 lakh per plot in two phases and the handover was due in December 2009, they said at the conference, organised by Lake City Housing Society Malik Samity at Chittagong Press Club on Saturday.
The samity President AKM Mujibul Haque Chowdhury, Vice President Mohammad Salamat Ullah and Adviser Jadu Chowdhury were present on the occasion where its General Secretary Mohammad Afaj Ullah Chowdhury read out a written statement.
The owners, numbering 547, including 59 American citizens, are now unsure of the time CCC would take for the handover, they added.
They met Mayor M Manjur Alam on September 14 but failed to get any assurance in this regard. CCC estate department blamed negligence of the immediate past mayor for the delay, they said.
CCC sources said the project had no approval from Chittagong Development Authority and Department of Environment, resulting in the delay.
Encourage kids to read literature
Parents should inspire their kids to read children's literature like rhymes, folk verses, fairytales, stories and biographies of noted personalities to increase their creativity and knowledge arena, said speakers at a conference.
Bangladesh Shishu Sahitya Academy organised the conference titled “We will bring a crimson morning for the children” at Abdul Khalek auditorium in Chittagong Press Club on Saturday.
Deep Mukherjee, poet and littérateur on children's interests, inaugurated the programme as the chief guest with Principal Anwara Alam of Agrabad Mahila College in the chair.
Noted writer Fahmida Amin, Prof Mayukh Chowdhury, littérateur Faruque Hossain, Ashraful Alam Pintu, Principal Tapankar Chakraborty, Rahim Shah, Naser Mahmud, Bakul Haidar, Jahangir Alam Jahan and Jaglul Haidar also spoke on the occasion.
Safe water and improved sanitation for slums stressed
Speakers at a rally urged Chittagong City Corporation to take necessary steps to provide the city's slum dwellers with permanent housing, safe drinking water and improved sanitation and to establish a separate department for their development.
WaterAid and Dushta Swasthya Kendra (DSK), two non-government organisations, organised the rally titled “2013-Sanitation for all: May sanitation month be a success” after a human chain in the city's AK Khan Road area on Sunday.
Bangladesh Jubo Union Chittagong district unit President Arifullah Hai spoke as the chief guest with Bostibasi Unnoyan Sanstha (BUS) President Mohammad Sarifullah in the chair.
BUS Secretary Mohammad Mainuddin, DSK unit Manager Ujjal Shikdar, CBO President Hasina Akhtar and right activists Shipra Chakraborty, HN Iqbal, Selina Akhtar and Md Anwar also spoke at the conference.
Commemorative meeting on Nur Ahmed held
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M Manjur Alam said Nur Ahmed, the former chairman of Chittagong Municipality, was the first to introduce free primary education in the port city.
CCC later expanded this initiative, he said while addressing a commemorative meeting on Nur Ahmed, also a parliamentarian of undivided Bengal Legislative Assembly, at CCC auditorium on Saturday.
Nur Ahmed was patriotic and won the hearts of the masses through his works. A man like Nur Ahmed is the crying need of society at present, said Manjur.
Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasnee, researcher Sakhawat Hossain Mojnu, Nur Ahmed's grandson Prof Selim Jahangir and councillors Neaz Mohammad Khan and Rehana Begum Ranu were present as the special guests.
CCC launches 12 new dump trucks
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M Manjur Alam on Saturday formally declared the addition of 12 new dump trucks bought from China.
These trucks would be used to remove earth collecting in drains and canals, helping to reduce waterlogging. CCC's main task is to keep the city neat and clean through quick disposal of garbage, he said.
CCC Secretary Md Shamsuddoha, Caretaker Engineer Abdul Malek, Assistant Engineer Sudeep Boshak and Chief Conservation Officer Shafiqul Mannan Siddique were present on the occasion.

Education is the most valuable ornament of a human being, capable of illuminating them and the society, said speakers at a conference.
The inaugural session of the three-day long Conference-2011 of “Sri Sri Thakur Onukulchandra Satsangha of CU unit” was held at the central library auditorium of Chittagong University (CU) on Thursday.
Faculty of Social Science Dean Prof Dr Jyoti Prokash Dutta, CU Sanatan Dharma Parishad President Prof Dr Tapashi Ghosh Roy and Prof Dileep Dash spoke at the programme with the satsangha President Roni Dash in the chair.
