An Bangladeshi expat in South Africa was found dead at her house in Lydenburg town of Mpumalanga.

Sumon Ahmed, husband of deceased Shanta Islam, went into hiding since the incident happened on Sunday (August 28, 2022), according to the Bangladeshi community and expat journalists.

However, it is not known yet how and when Shanta was murdered. Shanta, of Thalpara village under Mirzapur upazila of Tangail, was the only child of her parents.

Her husband Sumon is from Kanchanpur village under Basail upazila of the district. Shanta's neighbours told reporters that one of her relatives went to her Lydenburg house to pick her up on Sunday (August 28) morning local time. At that time, the house was locked from inside.

Despite repeatedly ringing the bell, the relative did not get any response and became suspicious.

Shanta had apparently talked about her husband abusing her and requested to go to her relatives.

He sought help from the local police, and then police rushed to the scene, broke open the lock and found Shanta's body on the floor in the house. Police recovered the body and sent it to a local hospital morgue for postmortem.

Police are investigating the incident and trying to find her husband. According to the relative, Suman and Shanta had a relationship in Bangladesh. Shanta travelled from the country to South Africa at her own expense.

They tied the knot in South Africa. But after a few days, her husband started to torture her mentally and physically.
