The government has “started the process” to bring back Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the sensational seven-murder in Narayanganj, who was arrested in Kolkata on Saturday night.
“… He [Hossain] will be brought back,” State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters at the secretariat yesterday. He said Bangladesh and India have an extradition treaty which should make things easier for him to be brought back.
He did not elaborate what the Bangladesh government had done to get Nur Hossain back in the country.
Meanwhile, relatives of the murder victims and locals held demonstrations in Narayanganj yesterday demanding that Nur Hossain be brought back immediately.
A Kolkata court yesterday placed Nur Hossain and his two associates on an eight-day remand for each.
An anti-terrorism squad of Kolkata police arrested Nur Hossain along with Zahidul Zaman and Salim, reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting a senior official of Indian police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Arnab Ghosh of Bidhan Nagar said Nur Hossain, Zahidul Zaman and Salim were arrested at Indraprastha flat building in Koikhali, two kilometres away from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport, around 9:30pm Saturday.
He said the trio were Bangladeshi nationals and did not have valid documents with them at the time of the arrest, carried out following a tip-off from Bangladesh. They had a firearm with them too.
The three were produced before the court in connection with the illegal gun and intrusion into India.  
Abida Islam, Bangladesh deputy high commissioner in Kolkata, told The Daily Star that the West Bengal government was yet to officially inform the mission about the arrest. “We came to know of it from the media in Bangladesh,” she said.
Asked whether the deputy high commission would seek consular access, she said steps would be taken after the West Bengal government formally informed the mission of the matter.
She said the arrest being made late Saturday night and yesterday being Sunday, the weekend in India, might have caused the delay in India's informing Bangladesh of the matter.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said the foreign ministry would act fast once it got a request from the home ministry to bring Nur Hossain back.
Meanwhile, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Khandaker Mahid Uddin had a telephone conversation with Anik Sarkar, an assistant superintendent of the anti-terrorism squad of Kolkata police.
“I got the assurance about it [the arrest of Hossain] after talking to them [Kolkata police],” Mahid told reporters at the Election Commission office in the capital yesterday.
As the murder case was lodged in Narayanganj, Narayanganj police would initiate the extradition process of Nur Hossain, said a top official of the home ministry.
According to the 2013 extradition treaty with India, Narayanganj police will have to send translated copies of all documents, including the case statement and court warrant orders, to the home office through police headquarters, he added.
The home ministry will then proceed with the extradition appeal to the foreign ministry, which will ask India to deport Nur Hossain.
Relatives of the murder victims in Narayanganj yesterday expressed satisfaction over the arrest of Hossain, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Around 11:00am, they brought out a procession from Mouchak in Siddhirganj of the district demanding that he be brought back.
The procession halted vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for some time.
Nur Hossain stands accused of the gruesome abduction and killing of seven people, among whom were Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar.
The seven were abducted on April 27 in the city and six bodies were spotted floating in the Shitalakkhya river on April 30. The seventh surfaced the next day.
Hossain, councillor of ward-4 and a close aide to Narayanganj-4 Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman, fled the country after the abduction, sources said.
Nazrul's father-in-law Shahidul Islam said once Hossain was quizzed, the names of high-profile people's links with the murder would pop up. He claimed that Hossain and some others had bribed some Rab-11 officials Tk 6 crore to have Nazrul killed.
Following the allegation, three top officials at Rab-11 -- Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana -- were fired. They are now behind bars and facing investigation.
