‘Basherkella chief’ held

Detectives today claimed to have detained the prime administrator of pro-Jamaat-e-Islami Facebook page Basherkella from Comilla.

Detained KM Ziauddin Fahad has several Facebook accounts under varying aliases and is involved in spreading propaganda against the state, police said in a media briefing.

Plainclothes picked him up from a residential area of Comilla Cadet College upon secret intel around 4:30pm on Thursday, DMP spokesperson Monirul Islam said.

News of him being held was floated to the media this morning. Later this afternoon, Monirul Islam revealed further details from a press conference at the DMP centre in Dhaka.

"Fahad is involved in spreading propaganda against government, judiciary, police forces and other state organs," Monir said. "He has several Facebook accounts and operates under several aliases."

Fahad is the main admin of a variety of social network pages like Basherkella, Titumirer Basherkella, I am Bangladeshi, Digital Rupe BKSAL, Bashkhali News24, Islamic Online Activist, Basherkella USA, BKSAL Nipat Jak and others, the police official claimed.

Basherkella's Facebook page is widely known to be a platform from where Jamaat-e-Islami and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir spreads propaganda on the social network.
