Assault on polls officer: Ctg MP gets bail
Chittagong-based lawmaker from the ruling Awami League Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury today secured bail after he surrendered before a court in a case filed over assaulting an election official.
Local court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Sajjad Hossain passed the order when MP Mustafizur appeared before it and moved a bail prayer around 11:00am, our Chittagong correspondent reports.
Abul Hashem, a lawyer for the lawmaker, confirmed The Daily Star of the development.
MP Mustafizur surrendered before the court following a High Court order that asked him to do it by June 20. The order entitled law enforcers to arrest him if he did not submit by the deadline.
On June 1, Mustafizur allegedly "beat" and "verbally abused" Banshkhali Upazila Election Officer Zahidul Islam at the office of Upazila Nirbahi Officer for not appointing the MP’s men as polling officials in the upazila parishad polls there.
Later, a case was filed against him.
