Awami League today said it will hold a rally at Dhaka’s Bangabandhu Avenue marking the second anniversary of the January 5 elections if police deny the party permission for Suhrawardy Udyan.

Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif came with the plan at a press briefing at the AL president’s Dhanmondi after a meeting with the party’s associate bodies on the preparation of January 5 programmes, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

“We sought permission from police on December 31 for holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan. But, police are yet to give any update,” he said.

Hanif also said they took the decision today to hold the rally in front of the party’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue after they came to know that police would not allow anyone to hold programme at Suhrawardy Udyan.

As the tension growing over Tuesday’s planned rallies by the two archrivals – AL and BNP -- Dhaka Metropolitan Police today said it would not allow to hold counter rallies at the same venue on the same date.
