Don’t use EVM in JS polls, BNP writes to CEC

BNP today submitted a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda urging him not to use Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the next general election.

The party also expressed its keenness to sit across the table with the CEC to discuss on the reformation of the electoral law.

“We don’t want use of the Electronic Voting Machine in the next general election,” BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan told reporters after submitting the letter.

Earlier, a three-member delegation led by Khan went to the EC secretariat office in Dhaka’s Agargaon area around 2:30 pm and held a meeting with the CEC.

Khan told the CEC that many countries across the world have already rejected the EVM method while Bangladesh is going to implement the system.

“Motive of using the system is a proven matter. There is a doubt of digital rigging in the election,” he said.

During the talks, the CEC termed the EVM as a new system and said they will stay aside from using the system if objection from any quarters is raised, Khan said.

BNP wants reforms of electoral law

Stressing the need for the Representation of the People's Order (RPO), the party also expressed its eagerness to hold talks with the CEC to discuss the electoral law.

“The chief election commissioner said that he would send booklets to all concerned people including political parties seeking their opinion in this regard,” Khan said.

“We will join the talks as we want congenial atmosphere in the next general election,” he added.
