Bangladesh Chhatra League men reportedly confined Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur and its Social Welfare Secretary Aktar Hossain at Salimullah Muslim Hall of Dhaka University this afternoon.

Nur along with Aktar and some of his followers went to the hall around 5:00pm to visit Farid Hasan, who was beaten up allegedly by some BCL men last night for contesting as an independent general secretary aspirant in the election to Salimullah Muslim Hall unit students’ council.

As they entered the hall, a group of BCL men and VP and general secretary of the hall council unit confined Nur and Aktar in a room for at least two hours.

On information, Mahbubul Alam Zoarder, provost of the hall, went there and freed them around 7:00pm, reports our DU correspondent.

Then, the BCL men also “hurled eggs” at them when they were coming out of the hall.

The BCL men also “ hurled the rotten eggs” at Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, who was elected as VP of the Shamshunahar Hall union as independent candidate, and some other students at the hall gate.

Refuting the claims, Tahsan, president of SM Hall unit BCL, said Nur was not confined. He (Nur) came to lodge protest (over the assault) and stayed there on his own.

Asked about the allegation of egging female students, he said, “Female students are not allowed inside residential halls meant for male; some general students might have hurled eggs on them out of anger.”

Meanwhile, several hundred followers of Nur and other panel leaders of the March 11 elections to Dhaka University Central Students' Union have taken position in front of the residence of DU VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman protesting the alleged confinement and egging by BCL men.

They have been pressing for their two-point demand including punishment to the assaulters and eviction of outsiders occupying the residential halls, said Muhammad Rashed Khan, a quota reform leader, told The Daily Star.

Apart from the followers of Nur, the leaders and activists of the four other panels, who boycotted the elections bring allegations of rigging and irregularities in the elections, are also taking part in the demonstrations since 8:00pm.

Panels of leftists, independents and quota reformists boycotted Ducsu election. However, Nur assumed office on March 23 saying that he only took charge to continue to place the demand for reelection before the Dhaka University authorities.
