BNP calls on EC, requests fair polls
BNP today called upon the Election Commission and requested for a free, fair and impartial union parishad elections that will be held from March 22 in partisan manner for the first time.
A four-member BNP delegation led by the party’s joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed paid a visit at the election office around 1:15am today. They met Secretary Sirazul Islam for about 45 minutes.
Abdul Latif Jony, a member of the delegation , told The Daily Star that BNP also expressed fears that holding the elections under party banners “might create instability and unrest in the country”.
The election commission has announced the election schedule for the union parishad elections. Starting from March 22, the polls will be held throughout the country in six phases and end in June.
BNP, a party that boycotted the last general elections of January 5, later took part in the municipality polls but fared poorly in it. Now, it has said it will participate in the union parishad polls.
