Fakhrul’s bail extended for 6 weeks
The Supreme Court today extended for six weeks its order that had granted bail to BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three separate arson and vandalism cases.
The apex court asked Fakhrul to surrender before the lower court concerned after the six weeks expire.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order in response to a petition filed by Fakhrul seeking an eight-week extension of its July 13 bail order.
Fakhrul, now in America for treatment, recently submitted the petition to the SC through his lawyer, said the BNP leader needs at least eight weeks for his treatment.
On July 13, the Supreme Court granted a six-week bail to the BNP leader on medical grounds, clearing the way for his release from jail.
The court also directed him to surrender before a lower court concerned after the six weeks.
The Appellate Division passed the order after receiving the report from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on the BNP leader’s health condition.
Of the three cases, two were filed with Paltan Police Station on December 28 last year and January 4 this year. The other was lodged with Motijheel Police Station on January 6.
On April 16, Fakhrul, who is accused in 89 cases, got bail from the HC in another similar case.
The BNP leader was detained from the Jatiya Press Club on January 6, and later, was shown arrested in seven cases, his lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told The Daily Star.
