Fakhrul free to walk out of jail
-SC grants six-week bail to Fakhrul
-Asks him to surrender before lower court after 6 weeks
- Fakhrul to walk out of jail following the order
The Supreme Court today granted bail to BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for six weeks on medical ground in three vandalism and arson cases, clearing the way for his release from jail.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha asked Fakhrul to surrender before a lower court concerned after six weeks.
The apex court came up with the order after receiving a report from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on the health condition of the BNP leader.
The Supreme Court on July 9 ordered the BSMMU authorities to form a five-member board to examine the health of the detained BNP acting secretary general and submit a “complete” medical report.
The apex court today passed the order maintaining the High Court decision that granted his bail on June 21 in the cases.
The SC ordered to form the fresh medical board, as Fakhrul's lawyers raised questions over the report submitted by a three-member medical board of the BSMMU on Wednesday. The report said Fakhrul's heart condition was stable.
Fakhrul's lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain told the SC that the BNP leader had been suffering mainly from neurological problems, but the BSMMU medical board had prepared the report on his heart condition.
