Govt violates rights keeping Khaleda in abandoned prison: BNP

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today blamed the government for violating human rights by keeping the party chief Khaleda Zia in an abandoned prison in a “fake and politically motivated case”.

"It’s stated clearly in our constitution that no citizen can be sent in a solitary confinement ever. But the government has violated human rights by keeping Khaleda Zia isolated from any human contact and sending her in two hundred years old abandoned building," Fakhrul said.

Fakhrul was addressing a sit-in programme in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka today.

“The incumbent government is an illegal one and the ruling quarter must be tried for violating the rights of Khaleda Zia,” he said.

On February 8, Khaleda Zia was sent to the jail after she was given a five years’ rigorous imprisonment in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Fakhrul also called upon his party men to intensify the ongoing movement across the country to ensures immediate release of Khaleda Zia.   

“Our movement and struggle are to free Khaleda Zia from jail. This battle is also to free the people and to restore democracy in the country,” Fakhrul said.
