Illegal wealth: Trial to go on against BNP’s Altaf

Altaf Hossain Choudhury

The High Court today cleared the way for a lower court concerned to resume the trial proceedings in a corruption case against former BNP home minister Altaf Hossain Choudhury.

The court rejected a petition filed by Altaf challenging the trial proceedings of the case.

The HC also lifted its earlier order that has stayed the trial proceedings of the case.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for the trial court to resume the trial process against Altaf.

He said that the ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station on December 18, 2007, against Altaf on charge of amassing illegal wealth and concealing information about it.

Following a petition filed by Altaf, the HC in 2008 stayed the trial proceedings of the case and issued a ruling asking the ACC and government to explain why the process of the case should not the scrapped.

Today the HC rejected the ruling.
