Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, who was executed at Dhaka Central Jail last night for his 1971 war crimes, was buried at his village home in Sherpur Sadar upazila early today.

The Jamaat-e-Islami senior assistant secretary general was buried beside Kumri Bazitkhila Orphanage around 5:20am as per his last wish as he established the orphanage, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.

After his body reached at his native village Kumri Mudipara around 4:15am, his elder brother Kafil Uddin received the body from the local administration authorities.

Later, his namaj-e-janaza was held on the ground of the orphanage, the daily reported.

The government deployed four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh, four platoons of Rapid Action Battalion and riot police at key points in Sherpur district to avert any untoward incident.

Forty-four years after his nine-month-long atrocities across Mymensingh, this man was finally hanged around 10:30am yesterday for the mass killing he had committed.

On May 9, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Kamaruzzaman, one of the key organisers of the Al-Badr force, to death after he was found guilty of mass killing, murder, abduction, torture, rape, persecution, and abetment of torture in greater Mymensingh.

The Jamaat’s assistant secretary general submitted his appeal to the Supreme Court on June 6, 2013 challenging the tribunal judgement and seeking acquittal on the charges brought against him.

The 62-year-old Jamaat leader was arrested on July 13, 2010, at the Supreme Court gate and later shown arrested in the crimes against humanity case.
