CPB leader Murshed Ali passes away

Murshed Ali, a freedom fighter and a leader of Communist Party of Bangladesh, died at BSMMU in Dhaka this morning. He was 76.

The former General Secretary of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) was admitted to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) on March 26 after suffering a brain stroke.

He was put on life support at the hospital several times, CPB Dhaka Committee General Secretary Sajedul Huq Rubel told The Daily Star.

Murshed Ali was a member of the Central Control Commission of CPB, a supreme disciplinary body of the party.

Sajedul Huq said Murshed will be laid to rest at Ishwardi in Pabna after a namaz-e-janaza there in the evening. His first janaza was held at a mosque in Mirpur's Shewrapara area of Dhaka.

His body was brought to CPB office at about 11:30am where his long-time party comrades paid their last tributes. Murshed's body was brought to Central Shaheed Minar, where people from all walks of life paid tributes to the politician.

Murshed, who was born on January 19, 1945, was a physics student of Dhaka University.  He had served the DUCSU as GS from 1966 to 1967. He was also founder of Bangladesh Trade Union Centre and former president of Bangladesh Krishak Samity.

He was one of the organisers of Mass Upsurge of 1969, the Liberation War of 1971 and the anti-autocracy movement in the 1990s.
