Hefajat-e-Islam an 'anti-Islamic' group: Sheikh Selim

Terming Hefajat-e-Islam an "anti-Islamic" group, Awami League MP Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim today told the Parliament that Hefajat is a "militant and anti-liberation" element.

"They are enemy of the country. They should not be spared for the recent mayhem and violence. The government should handle them with an iron hand. If necessary, a tribunal should be formed to try them," Selim said while speaking on a point of order.

"They have tried to taint the glory of the country's achievement and independence. Action must be taken against them," said Selim.

"The madrasas from which Hefajat militants took to the streets, attacked and killed people, vandalised and burnt houses and establishments, must be shut down," he said.

He called upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to be tough against Hefajat and BNP-Jamaat clique. 

Selim said the defeated anti-liberation forces of 1971, who could not accept the birth of Bangladesh, engaged in mayhem and vandalism in Chattogram and Brahmanbaria to spoil the celebrations of golden jubilee of independence and birth centenary of Bangabandhu.

"They have no right to stay in Bangladesh," the MP continued.

Selim further said that BNP-Jamaat-Hefajat were involved in conspiracy.

Protesting Selim's statement, BNP MP Harunur Rashid told the Parliament that BNP did not oppose Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh.

"No anti-Modi slogan was made by BNP," he said.
