Nagorik Oikya blames govt for dengue outbreak
Nagorik Oikya, one of the partners of Jatiya Oikyafront, today blamed the government for its negligence in preventing dengue fever, rape incidents and reducing sufferings of flood affected people.
“All districts are under grip of dengue and the death toll reaches 61 so far but the health minister and two mayors of Dhaka North and South city corporations are deceiving people without taking any effective measure to repel mosquitos” said Mahmudur Rahman Manna, convener of Nagorik Oikya.
Speaking at a press conference in the capital’s Jatiya Press Club, he claimed the drugs that is being used in mosquito killing is not effective currently.
“Ineffective drug has been bought only to provide unfair privileges to a company though different newspapers for last two to three years have been publishing reports on it,” he said.
The authorities concerned are yet to import effective drugs in this regard, he added.
Citing the Prime Minister’s direction over dengue, he said, “If the PM’s directive is needed in such a case, then there is no moral right for the two city mayors of Dhaka and the Minister of Health as well as others concerned to hold their posts”.
He said that neighboring West Bengal has set a good example of preventing dengue fever while Bangladesh has set an example of failure in this case.
“Rather, the government is illogically blaming opposition parties to hide their negligence” he claimed.
Manna demanded free treatment for dengue victims and regular mosquito fogging operations in every union across the country.
Citing severe sufferings of flood affected people in the country, he said that some 120 persons have died so far due to the government’s failure in providing adequate relief and treatment of waterborne diseases in the flood affected areas.
Manna said that rape incidents are on the rise as the rapists are given shelters by the ruling party leaders and even by the law enforcers instead of being brought to book.
He demanded exemplary punishment for the murderers of Nusrat in Feni and Rifat in Barguna.
He condemned the government official’s threat against Dhaka University Prof ABM Faruque, who recently claimed to have found antibiotics in pasteurized milk of different popular brands.
“The government should have given him [prof Faruque] award for such a research rather than threatening him, which is shameful” Manna said.
He urged the ruling party to uphold democratic values instead of torturing opposition leaders and activists.
Among others, party advisor H M Akram, member Momenul Islam and Sahidulla Kaysar were present at the press conference.
