Will take charge as Ducsu VP tomorrow: Nur
Nurul Haque Nur has said he will be taking charge as the vice president to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) tomorrow.
The VP-elect of allegedly controversial Ducsu polls announced his decision in a press briefing at Madhur Canteen, Dhaka University, this afternoon.
Additionally, he vowed to continue pressing for re-elections and other issues related to the interests of general students after taking charge.
“I have taken the decision prioritising the opinion of most of the general students of Dhaka University,” he said at the press briefing.
Nur, a popular figure from the quota reform movement, was elected VP in the Ducsu election on March 11 boycotted by most of the participating panels including his.
One of his panel members, Akhter Hossain, won the social service secretary post.
WHAT DID NUR SAY EARLIER?
On March 17, at a separate press conference of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, Nur demanded repolling and alleged that the March 11 election was not held in a free, fair and credible manner.
He came up with the demand just a day after he along with other elected student representatives met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Gono Bhaban and sought her all-out cooperation in proper functioning of Ducsu for the welfare of all students.
On his speech at the Gono Bhaban, Nur said many BCL men were also present alongside Ducsu and hall union leaders at the prime minister's office on Saturday and that's why he could not say many things to the premier. He also claimed to have lost concentration there.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE DUCSU ELECTIONS?
The 28-year-long wait to Ducsu election was marred in election boycott by all the major panels over allegations of irregularities and vote rigging.
Only Bangladesh Chhatra League was the major panel left contesting in the election.
The other panels exploded in protests after boycotting the election and protested in campus demanding a re-election to Ducsu. They also called a student strike.
Proof of irregularities was found in Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, for which the provost was relieved of duties on Monday. Stashed unstamped ballots were found in Ruqayyah Hall.
Also, there was allegation of physical assault on Nurul Haque Nur and another attempted attack on leftists’ panel leader Liton Nandi.
Later, in the results announced in the wee hours of March 12, Nur was announced as the vice president, Chhatra League’s Golam Rabbani as general secretary, and Saddam Hossain as assistant general secretary.
