Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon, who failed to secure nomination for the next mayoral race from Awami League, has been elected executive member of central working committee, the highest decision-making body of the party.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also president of Awami League made Khokon a member of the committee based on her power vested upon her during the party’s 21st national council held on December 20 and 21, according to a press release of the party.

While collecting nomination papers, Khokon, in an emotion-choked voice, sought blessings from people and said that he was passing through a very hard time in his political career.

He also requested the city dwellers to stand beside him so that he can fulfill his unfinished works as a mayor.

Later, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names of DNCC incumbent Mayor M Atiqul Islam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, MP as the party candidates to contest to DNCC and DSCC elections respectively.

After splitting Dhaka City Corporation into two parts in 2015, Sayeed Khokon, son of Mohammad Hanif who was mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation, was elected as mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation on April 28 in the same year.
