PM, President mourn death of Queen Elizabeth II

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina offered Britain's royal family "heartfelt and deep sympathies" over the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

In a condolence message, the Head of the State conveyed deepest sympathy to members of the Royal Family at her death and also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul, the state-run BSS news agency said.

The leader of the former British colony, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, "offered her deep condolences and expressed her sorrow at the death of Queen Elizabeth II", her spokesman Hasan Jahid Tusher told AFP.

Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth and the queen, who headed the grouping largely made up of former British colonies, visited the country in 1983, just over a decade after it won independence from Pakistan.

Bangladesh and Britain enjoy warm ties, with British aid agencies playing leading roles in some of the country's development projects.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul also expressed deep shock at the death of Queen Elizabeth, reports UNB.

"A legend passed away. She left a legacy incomparable in human history and lived with honour, grace and dignity. We are deeply shocked," Momen said Thursday.
