OIC satisfied with Bhasan Char’s infrastructure, other facilities

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed satisfaction at the physical infrastructure and other facilities being provided by Bangladesh government for the Rohingyas in Bhasan Char, while assuring continued support for resolving the humanitarian crisis.

A five-member OIC delegation led by OIC Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Ambassador Youssef Aldobeay made the observation after visiting Bhasan Char and Kutupalong Rohingya Camps in Cox's Bazar today, said foreign ministry.

While visiting Bhasan Char, the OIC delegation discussed overall situation of Rohingyas residing in Bhasan Char with the relevant stakeholders, and also interacted with the Rohingya people. Later, the OIC delegation visited the Kutupalong Rohingya Camp in Cox's Bazar and met the Rohingyas.

OIC praised Bangladesh for continued humanitarian contribution and providing temporary shelter to the persecuted Rohingyas of Myanmar.

The government developed Bhasan char housing project for 100,000 Roingyas to ease the congestion, reduce crimes and save the environment in Cox's Bazar camps. The country has relocated more than 10,000 Rohingyas since December last year.

At least 44 NGOs are working to provide humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas in Bhasan Char. The UN is seeking to conduct a technical assessment on Bhasan Char project, but that is yet to be done. The UN says it can support the Rohingyas only after the technical assessment.

The OIC delegation made the visit to the project site, meanwhile.

Others who were included in the delegation included Ibrahim Khairat, Special Representative of OIC Secretary General for Myanmar, El Habib Bourane, Director of Muslim Communities and Minorities, Department of Political Affairs and officials from the OIC General Secretariat.

A few officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accompanied the OIC delegation.
