Rohingya crisis: Korean ambassador discusses improved collaboration during Cox’s Bazar visit

South Korean Ambassador Lee Jang-keun interacted with UN agencies, local administration and NGOs on how to improve collaborations to resolve the Rohingya refugee crisis during his four-day visit to Cox's Bazar.

He was in Cox's Bazar from February 14 to 17 to visit the refugee and host community programmes assisted by Korea through international agencies, said a statement of the Korean embassy in Dhaka today.

The Republic of Korea has been contributing four to five million US dollars annually to the international organisations based in Bangladesh for assisting humanitarian efforts to address the Rohingya refugee crisis.

In 2020, the Republic of Korea contributed 4 million US dollars to UNHCR, UNICEF, IOM, WFP, and IFRC offices in Bangladesh.

On February 15, Ambassador Lee visited Cox's Bazar Rohingya refugee camp and engaged with humanitarian workers as well as the refugees.

He visited the Covid-19 Isolation and Treatment Center, Women and Girls Safe Space, Shelter Distribution Center, LPG Depot, Site Management Hub, E-voucher Outlet, Fresh Food Corner, WFP Logistics Hub and the host communities of Kulalpara and Rajapalong.

Do Yong-Ah, the Korea International Cooperation Agency Dhaka office representative, also joined this visit.

Ambassador Lee also held various meetings with UN agencies in Cox's Bazar, including IOM, WFP, UNHCR, and UNICEF, and was briefed on activities of the organisations in the camp and host community, and discussed how to improve collaborations for resolving the refugee challenges.

During the visit, Ambassador Lee also met with Rohingya Rehabilitation and Repatriation Commissioner Shah Rezwan Hayat. Ambassador Lee also held meetings with Korean NGO members and business people working in Cox's Bazar.
