Tomica's Crown Wagon
I have a soft spot for wagons. And few wagons are cooler than the long, low slung classic barges of the 60's and 70's. The S60 and S70 Toyota Crowns made from '71-'74 provided a massive leap forward in styling. This model had a couple of distinct features that stood out above the rest. One was the 'boomerang' turn signals incorporated on either trailing side of the hood and then there was the flush mounted bumpers. The Crown Custom wagon officially sold as a seven seater and a hardtop, both with body colored bumpers to create a sleek form continuation.
Tomica Neo Vintage has recreated this 1:64 beauty to the minutest detail. The one shown here is the metallic light blue version that perfectly accentuates the slab sides and subtle design cues. Look inside and you can see the rear facing rearmost seats. It was meant for children and grownups that you needed to transport but didn't really love all that much.
3 reasons why you should get it: You love obscure classic JDM iron that no one else recognises. You have a thick, long beard that requires meticulous maintenance with beard wax. You miss the 70's.
Pros: Accurate to detail right down to the proper wheels size and steel wheel design. Some would prefer the fact that rubber tires roll independently. Interior has a properly shaped steering wheel. None of that solid disc shaped Hotwheels cost-saving here.
Cons: Rubber tyres aren't perfectly round so when they roll, there's an ever so slight wobble. Chrome parts are painted an ultra-bright silver unlike on similarly priced Kyoshos. Some might feel this detracts from the realism. Others simply won't care.
This and similar vintage models from Tomica typically go for $20 on eBay.
Pointless trivia: It was known as the Blue Whale. Not very difficult to see why.
