2015 Pick-up trucks
Outside the frankly American realm of wide-open countrysides and its trailer-haulin', gun-toting populace, pickups don't make a lot of sense. Considering the almost rural nature of Bangladeshi roads and highways, however, a pickup for personal transport starts to make some sense. A lot of people in the cities are investing in a country house, and an even larger portion take frequent trips to resorts and getaways as an escape from the bustle and humdrum of city life. These following pickups will swallow enormous amounts of luggage, friends, and friends you might think of as luggage. This Valentine's Day, improve your pickup game.
Ford Ranger Xlt
Its no secret that Americans excel at making trucks. The Ranger is the best looking truck out there in the Bangladeshi market today, with sleek lines and a handsome face, and coupled with the 2200cc TDCI engine and 6 speed tiptronic gearbox, the tagline "Built Tough" starts to make sense. There's an impressive 375 Nm of torque on tap, so lugging around weight has never been easier. Couple that with top of the range safety features (4 airbags and engine immobilizer) and equipment (keyless entry, Bluetooth, cruise control and more), the Ranger offers a lot for the price you pay. If you'd like more of a bargain, go for the Ranger with the 5 speed manual, which has less equipment and a slightly less powerful engine. We'd personally go for the automatic and the immense torque it has to offer. Want more proof of the Ranger's abilities? The Bangladesh Navy SWADS unit uses the Ranger as its official mode of transport.
PRICE: Ranger Double Cabin price ranges from 43-52 lakh Taka.
Toyota Hilux D-4d
A common sight on our streets, there's a reason for the popularity of the Hilux, considering the long standing stamp of reliability and efficiency the Toyota brand has. The 2500cc four cylinder turbo-diesel engine is highly efficient and has about 260 Nm of torque on offer. The 5 speed manual makes the drive engaging and efficient, making the task of carrying weight easy. It looks good and is well finished, so what's not to like?
PRICE: Hilux Double Cabin price Starts from 45.50 lakh Taka
Single Cabin price starts from 27.00 lakh Taka.
Mitsubishi L200 Triton
Mitsubishi's Triton takes the years of experience at rallying and off-roading at Dakar and WRC and puts all of that into a pickup truck package that can tackle any sort of terrain with ease. The L200, after the discontinuation of the other offering from Nissan, has become the favoured mode of transport for Fire and Police civil defense services. It may not have the good looks of the Ranger, but it is a capable enough pickup that will do most of the things you ask of it, with a 2500cc diesel engine, 5 speed manual gearbox, and 4WD.
PRICE: L200 Triton GLS Lower Package 43.50 lakh Taka. GLS Higher Package 45 lakh Taka.
Great Wall Wingle 5
The Chinese alternative to the more common trucks in Bangladesh has a definite price advantage. Compared to the rest of the trucks here, the materials used are a little cheaper, but the Wingle 5 has boatloads of torque from its 2000cc diesel engine, so you won't be complaining. We went flat out in one of the trucks we tested back in 2014, and it was an eye opener what good torque and a good gearbox can do. You don't get a lot of standard equipment, but it's still a bargain deal, and if you're worried about Chinese build quality, don't be because they've come a long way in the last decade. It can only go uphill from here.
PRICE: Ranges from 32-37 lakh Taka.
Ssangyong Actyon Sport Truck
The absolute left field choice in this current crop of pickup trucks, the Actyon takes a leaf out of the Chinese way of doing things and applies a distinctive Korean touch to it. Ssangyong isn't known for making the prettiest looking vehicles out there, but as one of the cheaper trucks here, the Actyon, branded as a "sport truck", makes a pretty good argument against the others. Munch on this: 360 Nm from a 2000cc diesel, and the manufacturer claimed mileage figures for the 6-speed automatic with part-time 4WD is 8 km/l. Pretty impressive.
PRICE: Starts from 37.5 lakh Taka.
