Guests at EWU voice opinions on use of Bangla in judicial courts
Bangla is stated to be the sole language of Bangladesh as per the Article 3 of the Constitution. Consequently, it is mandatory to use Bangla in every affair of the state. For this reason, there should be an absolute use of Bangla in the judiciary along with the other organs of the state i.e. Parliament and Executive. Otherwise, the constitution is violated.
These opinions were voiced by Justice Md. Ashraful Kamal of Bangladesh Supreme Court as the chief guest in a public lecture entitled "Mayer Vashay Adaloter Ray" (Judgement of Courts in the Mother Language) organised by Department of Law, East West University (EWU). The public lecture was held on February 25, 2017 at Aftabnagar, Dhaka. VC Prof. Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan chaired the programme.
Justice Md. Ashraful Kamal also opined that the language of the court should not be complex and it must be comprehensible to general people. He expects that from this February, the month of the language movement, Bangla will be used as the language of the Supreme Court instead of English. In the programme, Chairperson of Department of Law, EWU, Prof. Dr. Tureen Afroz addressed the welcome remarks.
