ULAB launches workshop on Postmodernism

The Center for Advanced Theory (CAT) at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) inaugurated a workshop on Postmodernism on June 3, 2017. Dr. Salimullah Khan, a professor of Law, Economics and Cultural Studies is going to conduct the semester-long workshop. Prof. H. M. Jahirul Haque, VC of ULAB inaugurated the workshop, which is supposed to offer twelve sessions. In his speech, the VC thanked the seventy participants coming from different universities and media houses for taking up the inter-disciplinary workshop. He encouraged them to write monographs on different topics on the thinkers of Postmodernism including Jean Francois Lyotard, Walter Benjamin, and Charles Baudelaire. The workshop will offer sessions on Saturdays between 10.30 AM and 1.30 PM in Campus A. Interested ones may write to cat@ulab.edu.bd for details.

AIUB team reaches Universal Research Exploration 2017 finals

Students of American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Computer Science will participate in the final round of research rover robot-based competition, University Rover Challenge (URC), which is organised by the Mars Society, USA. 

AIUB Robotic Crew consists of 11 members and has built a rover robot which can perform various types of research and maintenance works on the Mars surface like terrain traversing, equipment servicing, astronaut assisting, sample collection, and more. They worked under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman and Senior Assistant Professor Ebad Zahir. The Mechanical & Structural Design Team Leader Ragib Shahriar has clarified that this year robot has the hybrid custom suspension system with both the concept of spider and individual suspension system and more robust mechanical design which is the first time for any Bangladeshi team. The Software & Hardware Interface Team Leader Mahmud Mozammel told that all the electrical circuits were built by the team and can control the robotic operation precisely. The rover controlling software was also built by the students. 

The university authority has told that this it is a matter of great pride that 6 teams out of the final 36 are Bangladeshi. Previously they had to fight a very competitive Critical Design Review stage with 82 teams to get qualified for the final round.

 

fLTR completes "Teaching for Active Learning" course

Foundation for Learning, Teaching and Research (fLTR) has successfully completed a certificate course on Teaching for Active Learning (TAL) from May 18-20 at UIU campus. A total of 41 faculty members from 5 public and 16 private universities attended in the course. The course was designed for orienting and developing teaching and learning skills of senior and junior faculty members of different universities. Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir, VC of Green University of Bangladesh provided overall guidance and acted as lead facilitator and Director for the course.

David Maynard, Deputy Director of British Council Bangladesh; Shaheen Khan, Cultural Specialist of the American Center, US Embassy; Prof. Syed Saad Andaleeb, VC, BRAC University; Prof. Yousuf M Islam, VC, DIU, were present as guests where Prof. Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, VC of UIU chaired the closing session.

 

School of Science & Engineering of SEU organises freshers' orientation programme 

Freshers' Reception and Orientation Programme of newly admitted students of Summer semester 2017 under the School of Science & Engineering of Southeast University (SEU) was held on May 22, 2017 in its Seminar hall. Maj. Gen. Kazi Fakhruddin Ahmed, SPP, psc (Retd.), Registrar of SEU welcomed newly enrolled students. VC of SEU, Prof. Dr. ANM Meshquat Uddin, chaired the session while Md. Abdullah Al-Hasan Chowdhury, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Education, was present as the chief guest. Mahboob Zaman, Managing Director of Datasoft Systems Bangladesh Ltd. and former President of Bangladesh Association of Software & Information Services attended the program as special guest. Prof. Dr. M. Shamsher Ali, Professor Emeritus, SEU and Prof. Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, Pro-VC of SEU addressed the freshers. Prof. Syed Fakhrul Hassan, Dean of School of Science & Engineering introduced faculty members to the students. Among others, Prof. Dr. AFM Mafizul Islam, Advisor of BOT, Chairman of different departments, Wing Commander AHM Mostafa Morshed (Retd.), Chief Coordinator of BOT, faculty members, officials of SEU, newly enrolled students and their guardians were present at the programme.

 

BRACU students achieve international rating at World Chess Federation



Five chess players of BRAC University Chess Club (BUCHC) have achieved international rating after participating in 11th Amrita Lal Dey International Rating Chess Tournament held in Barisal. World Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially published the players' names and ratings on their website. 

The newly rated chess players are the university's current students Mohammad Shakil, Nahian Habib, Golam Yeazdani and Nahian Raonak from the Computer Science and Engineering Department (CSE). Md. Hasnat Awal, an alumni and a recent graduate from BRAC Business School also earned rating from the same tournament.

Seventeen chess players from the chess club participated in the tournament including the club's rated chess players. Ejaz Hossain, a visually impaired MA in TESOL student, won prize in his rating category and Mohammad Shakil from the Computer Science & Engineering became the best non-rated player.

The chess club of the university currently has 13 rated chess players. BRAC University Chess Club aims to promote chess as an educational tool to develop students' cognitive abilities and critical thinking skills.

 

WUB celebrates 8th anniversary of Textile Engineering Department

The Textile Club of World University of Bangladesh (WUB) celebrated the 8th Anniversary of Department of Textile Engineering on May 26, 2017 at Panthapath campus auditorium. VC of the university, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury graced the event as chief guest and Raashid Ashraf Khan, Chief Executive Officer, Silver Composite Textile Mills Ltd. was the guest of honour. Prof. Dr. Engr. Shah Alimuzzaman Belal, Advisor of the Department of Textile Engineering, was present as special guest. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Head, Department of Textile Engineering chaired the session. Controller of Examinations, Heads of departments, faculty members and students of the department were present in the programme. The programme ended with a cultural event. Textile Today was the media partner in this programme.
