BUBT honours Syed Hasan Imam for contribution in the Liberation War
Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) observed the 49th Independence Day and National Day with a discussion in its Hall room of permanent campus, Rupnagar, Mirpur 2, Dhaka on March 26, 2019. The university also honoured media personality and the freedom fighter Syed Hasan Imam with a gold medal for his contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 on the occasion.
After receiving the medal from VC of BUBT Prof. Md. Abu Saleh, Imam addressed the students of BUBT as the chief guest. He recalled the role of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the Liberation War and said that the spirit of war was building a nation in peace and equality. Our great fighters fought for a poverty free Bangladesh in 1971.
AFM Sarwar Kamal, former Chairman of BUBT Trust spoke as the special guest. Prof. Mian Lutfar Rahman, Advisor, Students' Affairs, delivered the welcome speech. Prof. Syed Anwarul Huq, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities presented the role of the media and journalists in the war. Members of the BUBT Trust, Treasurer, Deans of all Faculties, Registrar, Directors including the Director of IQAC-BUBT, Controller of Exams, Proctor, Joint Registrar, Chairmen of different departments, teachers, officials and the students were present in the programme.
NSU organises Law Fest 2019
North South University Law & Mooting Society, a student organisation under North South University (NSU) organised the second instalment of their signature event "Law Fest". This three-day-long event took place from April 1-3, 2019 consisting nine different segments.
Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, Md. Atiqul Islam graced the event as the chief guest of the inauguration ceremony. The session was chaired by VC, NSU, Prof. Atiqul Islam and Pro-VC (Designate) Prof. Dr. G.U. Ahsan graced the event as the guest of honour.
After the inauguration ceremony, the event continued with its segment titled "The Law Fair" in the Plaza Area of the North South University premises. Eight stalls were present from where the visitors could collect information on different laws and their applications, like Family Law and Laws of Torts among others.
Members of BOT, NSU, Mohammed Shajahan and Benajir Ahmed, Deans of different schools, administrative heads, faculty members, senior officials, students and participants from different universities were also present on this occasion.
DIU Air Rover Scout Group organises Independence Day Camp 2019
To mark the Independence & National Day of Bangladesh, DIU Air Rover Scout Group organised Independence Day Camp 2019 on March 29, 2019 at Daffodil International University (DIU) campus at Ashulia, Savar, Dhaka for the first time in Bangladesh.
Zahirul Haque, National Coordinator of Bangladesh Scout and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs was present in the programme as the chief guest while Hemayet Hossain, Leader Trainer of Bangladesh Scout and Zonal Executive Officer, Zone 3 of Dhaka North City Corporation was present as the special guest. Prof. Dr. Yousuf M Islam, VC, DIU presided over the programme. The programme was also addressed by Md. Anowar Habib Kazal, Treasurer, DIU Air Rover Scout Group, Girls in Rover Unit Leader Farhana Rahman Setu, PRS and RSL Shaiful Islam Khan, DIU Air Rover Scout Group.
A total of 140 Rovers and Girls in Rover including four Rover Scout Leaders participated in this camp. Senior Rover Mate Jui Roy and Nazmul Hassan provided overall assistant to organise the camp. The daylong camp included training, workshop, awareness session on our Liberation War, hiking and discussion session.
UAP jointly hosts workshop titled "Sustainable Transport Equity Partnerships"
A two-day long international workshop on "Sustainable Transport Equity Partnerships (STEPS)" was held at Lakeshore Hotel Gulshan on March 27-28, 2019.
The University of Asia Pacific (UAP), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), The University of Leeds, UK, WALK21, and Work for Better Bangladesh jointly organised the workshop to find strategies and research avenues for "Making Dhaka Walkable". The prime aim of the workshop is to make Dhaka one of the best case scenarios. In the workshop, delegates from different government organisations, national and international universities, NGOs and research institutes participated to share important views about the topic.
In the inaugural session, Chondon Kumar Dey, Additional Secretary, Road Transport & Highway Division, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges was present as chief guest. AKM Hafizur Rahman, Joint Secretary AED (MT), DTCA, and Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, UAP were also present at the inaugural session.
In the workshop local researchers, Dr. Farzana Rahman and Dr. Sharmin Nasrin from Department of Civil Engineering, UAP, delivered their research on mobility challenges of low income population. Prof. Karen Lucas, University of Leeds; Bronwen Thornton, WALK21; Heather Allen, Gender and Sustainable Transport Expert, Belgium; Neil Lopez, De La Salle University, the Philippines; and Diana Odero, UN Environment, showcased different international best practice scenarios for pedestrians.
In the closing session on national professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, UAP was present as the special guest.
ULAB-BEI holds discussion on youth activism
The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organised a discussion forum on April 1, 2019 titled "Youth Activism for Better Governance." The event was held in ULAB Campus A Auditorium.
The event, organised with the support of International Republican Institute, featured a presentation by New York University's Prof. Michael Shank, which was followed by a panel discussion on youth activism.
After a welcome address by ULAB Pro-VC Prof. Shamsad Mortuza, BEI President Ambassador Humayun Kabir gave a brief speech on youth activism and introduced the speaker. Using the attitude towards climate change in the US as an example, Professor Shank, also the Communications Director for the Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance, spoke animatedly about ways to change the behaviour of people when serious issues, such as climate change, are at stake. He spoke of how global solutions could be found by engaging more people in meaningful activities.
Prof. Shank, Prof. Syed Manzoorul Islam from ULAB's School of Arts and Humanities, and Sajid Amit from ULAB's Centre for Enterprise and Society took part in the panel discussion session which was moderated by BEI Adviser Ambassador Sohrab Hossain. The discussion was followed by an engaging question-answer session. BEI officials, guests, faculty members, admin staff, and students from different departments of ULAB attended the event.
