My mother and I never really had a lot in common. However, our abysmal sleeping schedule is something we've been bonding over for years. The rest of our family seems to pass out whenever their heads hit the pillow, leaving the two of us to wander about in the night. On most nights, I would be cooped up in my room, playing games with music blasting from my headphones. My mother would either be praying or watching cleaning video compilations on Facebook in some other corner of the house. Sometimes, we would end up sitting together in the dining room, partaking in conversations. The rest of the household (and what felt like the world) would be sound asleep, while we talked about our respective days, family troubles, things we wanted to buy, and whatnot.
Earlier this year, I discovered the power of melatonin, which helped me in maintaining a decent sleep schedule. However, my mother and I no longer have those late-night/early-morn talks. I may be waking up well-rested, but I find myself missing my abysmal schedule.
