Student Accidentally Sends Private Message To Everyone In Online Class, Goes Into Therapy
One of the worst things that could happen, to a student in the era of remote learning, has happened to a high schooler in Dhaka.
During an online class, the student accidentally sent a private message that was meant for a friend to "Everybody" attending the class. She now has to go to therapy in order to heal from the shock resulting from the tragic incident.
We sat down with her outside of her therapist's office for an interview and asked her to open up about it.
"The day began just like any other day. I woke up to the sweet sound of my father yelling at me for oversleeping and got ready for my class, which started at 11 AM. I waited till 11.03 AM to join — I didn't want to be the first one present and have an awkward one-on-one interaction with the teacher," she said.
"I thought I had avoided the worst, but it all fell apart when I sent my friend a message arguing about which one of our crushes was better looking. Suddenly, I got a bunch of texts from some other classmates.
'Is she for real?'
'This is so embarrassing lol'
'You know he's in this class right?'
I saw that my deepest fear had come true. Message sent to: Everyone.
Everybody was laughing at me — I think even the teacher joined in at one point. It was like watching a car crash, except the car was my dignity."
She also volunteered some strong thoughts regarding the video conferencing app, "Seriously, what were they thinking when they designed the app? Oh, here's a good idea — let's merge the group messaging feature with the personal messaging feature and make both options look identical! Our users will be thrilled when they inevitably send their messages to the wrong recipient and have their social lives destroyed!"
We asked how she was dealing with the situation, knowing that her life was effectively over at this point.
"At least I'm not alone. See those guys over there?" she replied, pointing towards two others in the waiting room. "One of them forgot to mute his computer mic during class — now all his classmates know that he still makes his mom wash his underwear. The other one? He ran into his teacher outside of school at some grocery store. Poor guy didn't even know how to react. I don't blame him. I'd be pretty shaken up too if I had to make small talk with my teacher from behind a face mask and hear him say how great the discount on the toothpaste is instead of hearing the usual stuff like how we're the worst batch he has ever encountered and how he regrets becoming a teacher."
Her father, who is looking to transfer her to a new school, also spoke to us.
"She already had to change schools once because she accidentally sent her 'All You Need To Know About Bitcoin' folder to her teacher instead of her English assignment, and now this?" he asked, visibly exhausted. We did not have an answer.
At press time, we were informed that the student's family has gone into hiding until further notice as they were unable to continue their normal lives after the mortifying experience.
