Best of 2015

2015 has been undoubtedly a year for breaking records; be it Music, TV, or Film. With 2016 here, we at Star Showbiz thought we should look back at the best that the passing year had to offer before we bid it goodbye and usher in the New Year. So do enjoy our picks and we wish our readers a Happy New Year.

Furious 7

This film has seen an unprecedented crisis as one of its lead stars, Paul Walker, passed away in an automobile accident, leading some to believe this movie might either get scrapped or changed drastically. Thankfully, none of those rumours proved right as Furious 7 delivered everything fans had wanted and more, and served as a fitting tribute to the late actor. It also seems that the franchise will carry on as Furious 8 has been announced and is scheduled to begin production soon.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

While it's still too early to tell if the new trilogy will be as good as the original  and not fall into the trap of the prequel trilogies, there is no arguing over the fact that this has been the summit of Hype Mountain for last year. The film was released on December 18th and it has already smashed Opening Day Records and on its way to beat numerous others.

Jurassic World

Another record smasher, Jurassic World is the highly anticipated sequel to the three previous Jurassic Park movies. With new characters, a new time frame, and a completely fresh story that's based off the original and with a worthy performance by Chris Pratt, this movie was everything every movie goer had hoped for. The movie's success has already started plans for a sequel, so it seems the Jurassic is very much here to stay.

Music

Pentatonix by Pentatonix

Not a household name as of yet, but if their rising popularity is any indication, then that recognition isn't too far off. Starting small, the group leapt forwards with their performances in NBC's The Sing Off. Their true fame came with their tribute performance of Daft Punk, which still remains their highest viewed clip in YouTube. With their latest album, they have put out their own original content and each one is as good as they get.

A Head Full of Dreams by Coldplay

Coldplay introduced themselves with a heartfelt declaration: "We live in a beautiful world." Fifteen years and some 80 million albums sold later, the British quartet haven't elaborated on that philosophy—they've just amplified it. Their songs aren't just designed to uplift, they're often about the very sensation of being uplifted. On the band's seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams, the band's relentless campaign to raise our spirits continues the legacy they are set on creating.

25 By Adele

Ever since the release of the single “Hello”, people have been going bananas over Adele and waiting hand and foot for her new album. 25, released on November 20th, was everything that fans had in mind and more. Unlike many artists who have ventured into new territories to keep themselves and their materials fresh, Adele's 25 proves that the tried and true are just as good, if not better. The album is predicted to become the biggest-selling album of all time. Yes, it's that good.

Television

Narcos

This compelling Netflix drama follows Pablo Escobar's rise to power, from his early days to his violent battles with Colombia's police and other cartels. Netflix does more than trace the rise and fall of Escobar — it portrays various people entangled in his larger-than-life story, on both sides of the law and around the globe.

It has a documentary feel, often switching to archival images of the real Escobar or buildings and monuments in Colombia that played a part in the tale, turning it to a milestone series this year.

Daredevil

This series scores high in every department, and possesses a leading man (Charlie Cox) with the chops to hold it all together. Directorial inventiveness, with remarkable fight scenes with an air of clumsiness, depicts a true sense of reality and exhilaration to it.

Whether one decided to ration to sips or glug down all 13 episodes in one sitting, Daredevil was definitely a high note on last year's TV roster.

Better Call Saul

The Breaking Bad spinoff still has to tread far in order to meet the levels set by its cousin, however, if the past is of any indication, Vince Gilligan has set the stage for James McGill to achieve equivalent greatness. McGill remains a far cry from the badass, strutting Saul we know, but the season finale provided more detail to his transition from straight to woefully bent. As the character's story progresses, fans are thrilled to get to know a favourite from a more intimate angle.
