Su Hui-yu is a young Taiwanese filmmaker who had recent success in international film festivals. His most recent work "Super Taboo (2017)" was selected for world premiere in the Tiger Competition for Short Films in IFFR 2017.

 

According to you, Rotterdam is a combination of arts and films. Can you elaborate on that and your journey?

Su:Julienne Rose saw some of my works last year, and she introduced me to the program. I would say I was lucky to be selected for the festival.



Why do you say that you were lucky to have been selected?

Su:Well, I have never thought I would be participating in a film festival. I am definitely not the first one from my country to participate in Rotterdam. When I say that I am lucky, I mean that this is the first time I am participating in any competition, and that too a film competition. The jury of Rotterdam also happens to be very open-minded when it comes to the content of the films. I never expected that one of my films will be shown on the big screen.



How do you blend the art and films since you consider yourself an artist?

Su:I have always considered myself an artist. I made my films as an installation art, but it was Rotterdam that gave it recognition as a film and decided to show it on the big screen. Initially, I was very nervous about the screening, but once I saw it on the big screen, it looked very different from what I had pictured it as. So, I didn't really do anything to blend the art in the film.



Is there anything else you would like to share?

Su:Well, for me it is a very big festival, but also very relaxing. I never had this kind of response from the audience and professional people in this industry. The people here love to share their experience and if they think your work is good, they will just say it to you directly. To me, this isn't just a film festival. It's so much more than that. There are so many different things to see and learn from Rotterdam.
