The Bangladesh team are currently undergoing a training camp ahead of the T20I series against Afghanistan without the presence of a batting coach. T20I vice-captain Mahmudullah Riyad said the players were helping each other out and shared a story of how coach Courtney Walsh's suggestion worked for him during a nets session.

The Bangladesh cricket board (BCB) has retained bowling coach Courtney Walsh as the interim head coach for the T20I series against Afghanistan next month. The Tigers have been without a head coach since Chandika Hathurusingha stepped down last October.

Walsh had earlier assumed the role during the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka where Bangladesh made it to the finals of the tournament and team manager Khaled Mahmud had also suggested that Walsh supported the players and motivated them during the tri-nation tournament.

Riyad pointed out how Walsh's suggestion paid off for him during the ongoing training sessions.

"The previous day when I was batting in the net, I was rushing through my shots and was trying to hit hard. Then Walsh came and suggested that I rely on my timing more and also said that I might be gripping the bat too hard. It feels good to have such feedback. It also paid off later as I took the advice and connected well.

"Everyone is helping each other. It's up to us to take responsibility for ourselves and perform well." concluded an optimistic Riyad.

During the Nidahas Trophy BCB president Nazmul Hassan had commented that Walsh, one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time but a genuine number 11 for West Indies during his playing days, cannot be relied upon to formulate batting plans. He suggested that the players come up with plans themselves. Walsh, who has vast experience having been involved with cricket for 40 years, is proving that he can help Bangladesh's experienced batsmen as well.
