Walsh: Everyone plays for the team
West Indies great and Bangladesh's bowling coach Courtney Walsh says that his motto is to get everyone playing for the team and defines the current responsibility of being head coach as akin to being a 'father figure' who raises the confidence level of the players.
As Bangladesh are still without a head coach, Walsh has been appointed as the interim coach for the upcoming Nidahas Trophy T20I series, where Tigers play India and Sri Lanka.
The legendary fast bowler took over as the Tigers' bowling coach back in 2016 and has been working on the mental aspect to go along with focusing on bowling skills. So, for Walsh this interim coach role is part and parcel of the job.
"It is not difficult. I am fulfilling a role as a member of the coaching staff. The opportunity has come. I have accepted responsibility that goes with it," Walsh suggested when asked if taking on the head coach role will be difficult.
He likened the role to being a sort of father figure, one who understands problems and tries to instill confidence.
"It is going to be like a father figure, to give them the confidence. We must make sure everybody is prepared for the extra work that we need to do to get those out of form, into good form.
"We have to get everybody thinking that they have to play a role for the team, so that everyone plays for the team and do what is required. It is going to be my motto," Walsh reiterated.
Tigers' bowlers have been unconvincing in recent matches and Walsh, who is undertaking a bowling camp for the pacers, suggested that it is out in the middle that the improvements shown at the bowling camp will be tested.
"They (the bowlers) have made some good improvement in control and consistency, and getting the job done the way they are supposed to get the job done. If we can transform it into the middle on match day, then we will be able to give a better account of ourselves," Walsh concluded.
