Shakib hoping the Tigers will fare even better in Zim, WI series
Bangladesh's Asia Cup campaign was riddled by injuries to key figures like Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim. The Tigers lost opener Tamim Iqbal as early as the opening match and then Mushfiqur Rahim was rested for Afghanistan match to recuperate from a rib area pain. Before the vital virtual semifinal against Pakistan, ace all-rounder Shakib had to be excluded from the lineup as he was unable to even grip a bat.
Even with injuries, Tigers still beat Pakistan to make the final of the tournament and Shakib, who left the UAE before the final and returned to Dhaka was adamant that Tigers can fare even better in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe and West Indies since they were able to make the Asia Cup final without the service of key players like him and Tamim.
"The truth is that nothing waits for anyone. My wish is that Bangladesh will fare even better. If we could make the final without me and Tamim playing, then I don't see a reason why we can't win against Zimbabwe and West Indies."
He also saw the positive side of having the opportunity of blooding young players due to injury to other players.
"Injuries are just a part of sports. One or two players may not be fit at times and they won't always be able to play. The advantage is that it gives opportunity to new players. I hope the newcomers will be able to seize their opportunities and do well," Shakib said.
