Mominul to bat down the order

If everything goes according to plan then left-handed batsman Mominul Haque will once again bat late in the order in the Tigers' third group match against Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on February 26.

The 23-year-old batted at number nine position in the match against Afghanistan and that raised many eyebrows.

The batsman's assignation in ODI cricket has not been as fruitful as his performances in Tests and that is reflected in his averages in the two versions.

Mominul came in the World Cup team with a big challenge to prove his worth in the shorter version after he was dropped for two matches against Zimbabwe at home in November last year. Uncertainty regarding his batting position was also reflected during that series when he batted in three positions -- at number three, five and seven -- in three games he played.

After the latest position, many feared that the confidence of this young man could be heavily dented. "I think if you pick Mominul then he should be considered for number three position. But if you think he is not good enough for the top order, then there is no point picking him and it's better to pick Nasir Hossain for number seven position," said former cricketer Athar Ali Khan, who is now in Australia to follow the Tigers' World Cup matches.

Coach Chandika Hathurusingha reportedly was not in favour of considering Mominul for top order, and captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza also sided with him.

"I don't think Mominul's confidence will be dented. He is mentally very strong. Soumya [Sarker] looked very good in the number three position and I believe Mominul has got the quality to contribute for the team playing at number seven position. We need Mominul in the team," said Mashrafe.

Nasir has hardly any chance to bat at number seven as the team management has doubts over his form and ability of batting against pace bowling in Australia and New Zealand conditions. On the other hand, Mominul can get the chance to bat at top of the order only if opener Anamul Haque is dropped and Soumya opens. But for the third match this Thursday, there is hardly any chance to bring any change to the team.
