Nazmul Hossain continued his impressive form with a swashbuckling unbeaten hundred, took a stunning catch and produced a spectacular fast throw from point to initiate a run out to help Bangladesh secure an emphatic 114-run victory against Scotland in their second ICC Under-19 World Cup group match at the Sheikh Kamal International Stadium in Cox's Bazar yesterday.

The second consecutive win took the home team to the Super League for the fourth time in the tournament's history, while not far away at the Academy Ground Namibia Under-19s produced the upset of the tournament to condemn defending champions South Africa to an early exit and entered the Super League from Group A along with the hosts.

As Namibia meted out carnage at the second venue of the stadium complex, Scotland also tightened their grip on the hosts at the main venue but the home side rode on a 100-run fourth wicket partnership between Nazmul and captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz to negate Scotland's early initiative. South Africa however succumbed to early pressure to suffer a two-wicket defeat as Namibia overtook South Africa's total of 136 in 39.4 overs.

Loud shouts of celebration were sufficient to learn what happened on the other side but Miraz and Co were so engrossed in their battle that they were not even aware of the events 50 yards away after the the match. “Is that so?” was the response from the Bangladesh Under-19s skipper when told that Namibia had beaten South Africa.

Miraz was not too excited about their Super League berth as he was looking to finish as group champions by beating Namibia in the last group match on February 2 at the same venue, so that they can avoid India and get Nepal as their quarterfinal opponents. That outcome is not yet certain as Nepal and India play tomorrow to decide who tops Group D.

Bangladesh established their supremacy against ICC associate member Scotland thanks to Nazmul, who once again showed his class after making a match-winning 73 against South Africa in the opening match.  It was not a good start for the hosts after Scotland invited them to bat first in foggy conditions. Pinak Ghosh was trapped in front in the second over to a fuller length delivery from pacer Mohammad Ghaffar and the other opener Saif Hasan put up a depressingly defensive display as the right-hander even defended half-volleys -- he played out 22 balls before scoring his first run and was ultimately dismissed for 49 off 108 balls. Off-spinner Ryan Brown opened the bowling for his side and although he failed to turn a single ball, he received great respect from Saif, who made six off 31 in the first match.

Nazmul however was brilliant from the very beginning; as usual he rotated the strike and punished the bad balls. Saif's dismissal brought Miraz to the middle and he along with Nazmul totally changed the complexion of the game. When Nazmul reached 62, he became highest run-scorer (1747 runs at the end of the innings) in youth ODIs by toppling Pakistani Sami Aslam (1695 runs) and the elegant left-hander completed his hundred in style as he whacked pacer Ghaffar over mid-wicket for four and celebrated it with a triumphant leap. During his 117-ball 113, Nazmul, popularly known as Shanto, hit 10 sweetly-timed boundaries while Miraz during his well-composed 48-ball 51 struck four boundaries as Bangladesh put up a challenging total of 256 for six.

In reply, Scotland started well but Bangladeshi bowlers were spot on to dismiss them for 142 runs. Miraz gave the first breakthrough removing Neil Flack to break the 48-run opening stand but it was Nazmul who took the brilliant running catch at cover, before his scorching throw from point ran Owais Shah out, after which Scotland lost wickets at regular intervals.

“Saif batted as per the team's instruction despite being the best hitter in the team. Shanto was as usual brilliant in his batting on a slow track. Like batting, our bowling also followed the team plan and all these combined won us the match,” summarised skipper Miraz at the end of the match.
