Tailender Aliss Al Islam turned hero with a last-ball four as Chittagong Kings upstaged Khulna Tigers by two wickets in an enthralling Second Qualifier at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium to reach the BPL final against Fortune Barishal.
Khulna were on the brink of victory when Hasan Mahmud bowled the 19th over, conceding 5 runs. Chittagong needed 15 off the last over bowled by Mushfik Hasan and Arafat Sunny found a boundary through mid-wicket to keep hopes alive. Sunny and Aliss ran two off the next delivery to bring the equation down to 9 off four deliveries. The duo tried to run two again next ball but Aliss fell at the striker's as only one run came. Aliss would head back to the dugout retired hurt as Shoriful Islam came in to bat.
Shoriful managed a sneaky four off an inside-edge off to see Chittagong needing four off two. Shoriful would depart on the fifth ball off a slower and surprisingly, Aliss came back in again after just two deliveries to face the final ball. He would whack a four off the last delivery to send Chittagong into ecstasy.
In chase of Khulna's 163, Chittagong got off to a timid start as Hasan Mahmud struck early to remove Parvez Hossain Emon for four. The pacer would then produce a brilliant in-dipper to castle Graham Clarke for four as well. Yet two foreign recruits in Khwaja Nafay and Hussain Talat did what was needed in putting up a formidable partnership to take them past 100 in the 13th over. When Talat was caught at square-leg off Nasum Ahmed after a 25-ball 40, the game still looked in Chittagong's favour.
But Shamim Hossain, the batter who has come up with the solutions all tournament for Chittagong, departed cheaply to Nasum as the game soon changed complexion. Needing 47 off the last five over, Chittagong were dealt a blow when Nafay, having reached his fifty, was castled by Mushfik Hasan for a 46-ball 57.
When Hasan picked up Chittagong skipper Mohammad Mithun for seven, the game looked over but in a dramatic last over everything changed. Aliss picked up boundaries off Jason Holder to keep the score ticking and when the chance came to hit a four off one delivery to seize the game, he did just that during his 7-ball 17.
Khulna struggled with the bat early in the first innings as Binura Fernando castled skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz for two in the third over. Aliss Al Islam then got one to hold up just a bit as Alex Ross played it straight back to the bowler for a soft dismissal in the fourth over.
The alarm bells were ringing when Khaled Ahmed got in-form opener Mohammad Naim bowled after a 22-ball 19 before Afif Hossain's dismissal saw Khulna slump to four for 42 in nine overs. It took gritty knocks from Mahidul Islam and Caribbean star Shimron Hetmyer to get the innings running.
The duo took Khulna to 92 for four in the 16th over and then Hetmyer came good at the right time. Khulna would plunder 71 runs in the last four overs. First Khaled Ahmed went for 23 in the 17th over with Hetmyer managing two sixes and Ankon one.
Shoriful would pick up Ankon after a 32-ball 41 in the next over, going for 10 runs. Hetmyer hit four consecutive boundaries with two fours and two sixes off Binura's last over to pick up 21 runs before he departed for a 33-ball 63 in the final delivery. Jason Holder and Mohammad Nawaz then combined to take 17 off the last over bowled by Shoriful as Khulna reached 163 for 6.
Binura remained the pick of the Khulna bowlers with two for 27 despite conceding 21 in his last over.
