Shakib wants to step down as Bangladesh's WC captain: BCB source
Bangladesh ODI captain Shakib Al Hasan has communicated to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that he does not want to captain the country in the World Cup starting in India on October 5, a BCB source has told The Daily Star.
At midnight, Shakib and coach Chandika Hathurusingha went to BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon's residence for a meeting in a night of drama, fuelled by many rumours being floated in by the media. Logically, one might have assumed that with coach Chandika arriving late at night yesterday, the World Cup squad would be discussed. It was however a very different kind of discussion at the BCB president's house.
According to BCB sources, Shakib wants to step down from captaincy as he does not want unfit players. It is understood that Tamim Iqbal's current injury situation and his imminent inclusion in the World Cup squad has fuelled such a decision.
A separate high-placed BCB source also told The Daily Star that Shakib wanted to step down from the captaincy.
It has been learnt that BCB has called for a meeting this afternoon to complete the selection decision. The BCB high-ups, according to sources, are also trying to convince Shakib to remain as captain for the World Cup.
Shakib did not respond to The Daily Star's calls or text messages.
