Tamim shines in Bangladesh’s first away ODI series win in 9 years
Bangladesh are set to embark on a month-long tour in the West Indies this month to test their skills in all three formats against the home side, once an undisputed powerhouse of the game.
The first assignment for the Tigers and their new Test captain Shakib Al Hasan would be to turn the tides from the consecutive series defeats against South Africa and Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series at the Caribbean, slated to begin from June 16.
With Bangladesh's fifth tour of the Windies approaching, it will be a good time to start revisiting the highlight reel from the Tigers' previous tours of the Caribbean.
For this segment, we are only focusing on the three-match ODI series, which the Tigers won 2-1, during their tour of the West Indies in 2018.
Four stalwarts step up
Following a humiliating 2-0 defeat in the Test series, Bangladesh desperately needed something to lift their spirits up. And as it often happens, the four stalwarts of Bangladesh -- Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza -- stepped up to see the Tigers to a 48-run win in the first ODI in Guyana. Tamim struck his 10th ODI hundred, an unbeaten 160-ball 130, and stitched a 207-run with Shakib, who missed out on a ton for just three runs after promoting himself to number three in the batting order. And Mushfiqur's late blitz, a six-laden quickfire 11-ball 30, meant Bangladesh raised their highest total on tour, 279 for 4 in 50 overs, after electing to bat. Mashrafe did the trick with the ball in hand, registering a four-wicket haul and making a statement with his thunderous leadership to give the visitors some joy four weeks into what had been a horror tour.
Brilliant Tamim ensures Tigers' first away ODI series win in nine years
Tamim Iqbal led the charge for Bangladesh once again, smashing his second ton on the tour to help Bangladesh beat the West Indies by 18 runs in the third ODI in St Kitts. With that win, not only Bangladesh bounced back from their narrow three-run defeat in the second ODI but they also sealed the three-match series 2-1 -- the Tigers' first away ODI series win in nine years. Finishing as the top scorer in the ODI series for his 287 runs in three matches at a staggering 143.50 average, the left-hander deservingly bagged both player of the match and player of the series awards. In the final game, after opener Anamul Haque departed early, Tamim and Shakib Al Hasan had to do the rebuilding work for the third time in a row in the series as the duo starred in an 81-run second-wicket stand. Shakib fell after a promising 37 off 43 deliveries but Tamim went on to bat till the 39th over during his 103-run knock, setting the stage for Mahmudullah Riyad and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza for a late blitz. Thanks to the quickfore knocks from Riyad (67 off 49) and Mashrafe (36 off 25), Bangladesh made 96 off the last ten overs and posted a daunting 301 for six, which the Windies, despite fifties from Chris Gayle, Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, could not overcome.
