Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness is happy Mesut Ozil has retired from international duty with Germany, claiming the Arsenal midfielder has been "s*** for years".

Ozil was fiercely criticised as Germany crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage, while posing for a photo with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of the tournament led to a backlash in sections of the German media and support.

The 29-year-old, who is of mixed German and Turkish heritage, announced on Sunday evening that he was retiring from international duty, claiming racial discrimination from German football officials.

Ozil feels he was made a scapegoat for Germany's poor displays, but Hoeness says his retirement is welcome news having produced sub-par performances for years.

"I am glad that this scare is now over. He has been playing s*** for years," Hoeness told Sport Bild. "He last won a tackle before the 2014 World Cup. And now he and his s***** performance hide beyond this picture.

"Whenever [Bayern] played against Arsenal, we played over him because we knew that was their weak point.

"His 35 million follower boys - that don't exist in the real world - are convinced he has played sublimely when he completes a cross pass.

"The development in our country is a catastrophe. You have to go back to what it is: sport. And from a sporting point of view, Ozil has no place in the national team for years."
