Lionel Messi’s Barcelona contract does not include any political clauses, Barcelona based SPORT reports.

According to a report by Madrid based daily El Mundo, the contract Messi signed last November included a clause that he must remain a Barcelona player only as long as the club is playing in "a top-level European league."

However, Sport report said that sources at Barcelona have confirmed to them that the Argentine does not have such a clause in his contract.

Following the report from El Mundo, Barca said that it cannot comment on players’ contracts due to confidentiality agreements. In case of an Independent Catalonia, Barca might have to change federations and that could see them leaving La Liga.

A scenario like that could mean that all player contracts will be affected. Messi’s contract runs until 2021 and according to SPORT, his contract goes behind any political criteria and Barca have his complete commitment.

Even as FIFA’s rules will allow Messi to leave for free in case of a change in federation, the playmaker has allegedly told Barca that he will continue with the club and not leave on a free transfer.
