I will retire if Argentina win 2026 World Cup: Emi Martinez
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez said he would hang up his gloves if Albiceleste won the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"I'm retiring, I promise you," he said in a content published today by AFA Estudio in commemoration of the second anniversary of Argentina winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper participated alongside Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Gonzalo Montiel and Lautaro Martínez in a chat in which they recalled different moments of that historic milestone.
"Is there any team that has won two World Cups in a row?" asked Martinez before confirming that he would stop playing if he did.
With the final against France evenly poised at 3-3, Martinez saved a nearly-done goal from forward Randal Kolo Muani. Although many stories have been known about the protagonist himself, there were new details that the goalkeeper provided.
"I swear I saved a lot of better balls than that one," he told his teammates present there about the technical aspect of that save.
"In this one, I closed my eyes and said 'please blow my face off'."
"Not trusting the defense allowed me to be ready. When Ota (Nicolas Otamendi) caught him, I stood in front of him and diagonally. The ball was bouncing and that's why I raised my arms, because normally I put them down."
