Messi or Ronaldo? Liverpool legend Rush makes his pick
Liverpool legend Ian Rush scored 346 goals for the Reds during a coveted career. The legendary striker sat down for an interview with The Daily Star, organised by the club's commercial partners Standard Chartered Bank. The 58-year-old Welshman spoke about Jurgen Klopp's team that ended a 30-year title drought, his view of the current footballing climate, the bond with Diego Maradona and much more.
The debate regarding Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo has been a never-ending one in the past decade. Ian mentioned that he values both players highly. When posed the question on who he would pick as his favourite between the two, he found himself in a difficult spot. But Ian didn't ponder for too long. Having played in Italy with Juventus, he had a soft corner for Ronaldo's desire to play in Italy.
"Very difficult for me!" he said when asked to pick between the two. "Ronaldo has played in Italy with Juventus. If Messi chose a different country to play in, cause he has only played in Barcelona… Ronaldo has been to three different countries and been the top lad, so I will take Ronaldo," Rush told The Daily Star.
Asked regarding his favourite goal, he said: "They were all special to me, it was my job to score goals. Maybe the FA Cup final in 1986 against Everton. For me, Everton and Liverpool back then were the best teams in Europe. To beat Everton in a FA Cup final, that also being my first FA Cup final and scoring two goals in that match was a dream. I always dreamt as a kid that I would score a goal in an FA Cup final. In 1986 it came true and it was something special to me.
Rush also recalled the momentous occasion of Liverpool's Premier League title drought finally came to an end this season.
"Well first of all it's an incredible feeling that we won the league, people were saying that Liverpool were not actually playing when we won the league, because Chelsea beat Manchester city. But for me, we waited 30 years, so it didn't matter where we won the league as long as we've won it. for me it was great. I was at home, watching on tv when Chelsea beat Manchester city, we celebrated at home. The most important thing is, we waited for thirty years and we were getting to play at Anfield. I'm really happy that the game restarted. I mean the Premier league had done very well to finish the league. At one stage we thought that the season might not get finished and Liverpool may not be winning the league. To get the season finished was very very good."
The full interview will be published in tomorrow's print edition of The Daily Star
